Shiori Matsumoto was born in 1973 at Kagawa-prefecture in Japan. She started her fantastic paintings because she used to be watched fantastic animation films when she was a child. It was maybe from Europe, and that animation gave her a deep impression.

In a senior high school Shiori Matsumoto studied interior design and a sculpture. She also did go to Kyoto Saga University of Arts and learned western art history and the techniques of oil painting. Her main influence is surrealism, symbolism, modern illustration, and things by Japanese subculture.

“The paintings I’m trying
to make are dreamy, melancholic and cryptic atmospheres with girls who play fantasy and try to change the world with their own ritual.”

Many kind of different girls would appear in her paintings. They are playing with imagination and trying to change the world with their own rituals. Their existence are neutral, beautiful and sensitive but also cruel and lonely at sometimes. She guess that might be a ghost of herself in the past.

Shiori Matsumoto painting world is developed by European nostalgic and the yearning would never reach into her mind. She started exhibit her works on the internet in 1997, and also at gallery exhibitions all over in Japan. Her work is part of many private collections around the world.
