Limited Editions

Art is pure craftsmanship. Art is unique, authentic and original. That is why artists are usually very attached to the original characteristics of their work. Reproductions should be treated with the same amount of respect as the original. Art is art.

Etching, serigraphy and stone lithography are well known traditional graphic techniques. We would like to introduce to you however, a completely new and contemporary printing technique. This technique, which is called Giclée, offers a wide range of beautiful - high quality- options. Since we are not the only ones who’ve discovered this new technique; there are a lot of commercial reproduction companies offering commercial Giclées of inferior quality, we think it is time for a clear statement on sheer quality.

What is a Giclée?

Giclée comes from the French word ‘gicler’ and means a spray or a spurt of liquid. The word may have been derived from the French verb "gicler" meaning "to squirt". Using this technique means that we apply several layers of high quality ink on art print paper or canvas. The Giclée art form was invented in the 80’s in the US. By using the Scitex IRIS 3024 printer, which was introduced in 1987, it was possible to use the computer (Apple) to send digital images to this printer.

The beginning, the future number of American artists found out that the IRIS printer was extremely suitable to create limited editions. In 1991 Jack Duganne introduced the name “Giclée”. From that time on the American art world is familiar with this new way of creating limited editions, next to etching, serigraphy and stone lithography. In the US the Giclée has obtained its very own market position and soon Europe will follow.

The process

The process

The creation of a high quality Giclée starts with the reproduction of the original. The reproduction will be as closely matched to the original as possible. Often the artist will manipulate the digital image so it will maintain its very own character. After the artist’s approval, a digital master file will be created. This master file will be used to create a limited number of art prints. A Giclée is created individually and is of a dot free quality. The creation of a Certified Art Giclée™, which can take as long as an hour, is pure craftsmanship, overseen by a master printer.

Certified Art Giclée™

The Certified Art Giclée™ is a new and contemporary way of printing, meeting the highest requirements of artists and art collectors with respect to graphics. Because of this, the quality of Giclée art printing is regarded to be equal to the more common, traditional graphic techniques like etching, serigraphy and stone lithography.

European standard

The European standard for high quality giclées: the Certified Art Giclée™ hallmark from the Giclée Printers Europe assosiation has been created after the example of the American standard ‘Tru Giclée’ and the Giclée Printers Association’. Certified Art Giclée™ is a high quality hallmark for limited edition giclée art prints created by Giclée Master printers, who are members of the GPE Association (Giclée Printers Europe). The Giclée market is booming, but the diversity in quality calls for a standard quality hallmark. The Certified Art Giclée™ hallmark is thé European standard for original limited edition giclée art prints, which makes it possible to recognise quality. Now you will be able to distinguish between original, high quality and precious Giclées and prints of an inferior, usually disappointing quality, which are being sold as Giclées. Now, quality can be recognised. This hallmark allows professionals to dissociate themselves from amateurs, but moreover, the Certified Art Giclée™ logo guarantees consumers, artists and galleries that it concerns a high quality Giclée and the best re-creation of the original painting.
